Dear beloved readers and friends on rec.games.go,
It is so good to be able to speak to all of my friends in cyber space
tonight.
I am a little discouraged tonight. We have a problem. Do you know what the
problem is?
The problem is that during certain periods of time KGS is getting more
market share than IGS. I am really having a difficult time understanding
how this could be.
IGS has pro games out the whazoo- they don't really.
IGS was the first go server.
IGS has much better administrator
Our players are much stronger on average
Our spokesmen on rec.games.go are so much better.
In spite of all of this, it seems KGS is growing and IGS is struggling to
maintain market share in the Western world. IGS really needs to beat KGS
down. I have several ideas that come to mind about how to reclaim market
share. Here they are:
1. Charge players in the western world to play on IGS. This will make the
player realize that what they get is not for free and they will have greater
appreciation for IGS.
2. Get more strict on the derilicts. I think if IGS should work extra hard
to rid itself of the bad go players that have bad opinions on rgg, write bad
web pages and have bad associations with other go servers. IGS should then
market itself as the purest server on the web. I think there are quite a
few players that are looking for a pure go playing experience, and they are
not currently getting it on KGS.
3. Develop a new killer client. I think that it is time to go reverse
engineer cgoban or just copy it.
Nobody will know the difference and it will allow the users of KGS to feel
at home on IGS too.
4. Develop a new rating system. Lets face it, just copying the KGS rating
system is not going to be good enough. I think it is time to take a deep
deep breath and inflate the crap out of the rating system. IGS needs to get
as many dan level players into the fold as possible. By declaring a present
5kyu player a 1 d, while KGS continues to call them 4 kyu, can draw a lot mo
re folks over to IGS. I know IGS has already done a 3-4 stone inflation a
while ago, but gessh, it is still tougher then Japaneese and AGA ranks.
Besides, the only way to reclaim some of those 26 kyu morons may be to
redefine them as 22 kyus. They may be so stupid that they think IGS did
them a favor.
5. Discredit KGS by calling its developer a liar and a thief. I think that
if IGS takes the position that because Schubert worked on NNGS and NNGS was
stolen, that KGS must be a ripoff too. Personally, I think that calling KGS
a fraud and Schubert a thief is probably the best approach to regaining the
market share that KGS is STEALING from IGS.
6. Blow up the Computer that provides KGS. It may not take it down very
long, but it could force some users to try IGS and pick up a few points of
market share.
Oh, dear readers and friends, if you have other ideas, please share them
here. Maybe IGS will see something that can done to stop the KGS juggernaut
from wiping IGS from off the face of the western hemisphere.
I think I will go watch a Dracula movie to cheer myself up. I am sure I am
just having a bit of a down day and all will be well tomorrow.
