I have been a longtime fan of IGS. It has always been my server of
choice almost exclusively for several reasons:
· always had the most diversified opponents anywhere, players from
all over the world
· was one of the toughest servers around
· has just about the best client and most gorgeous board out there
(glGo)
· allows all kinds of clients to operate on the server (which
increased diversity)
· large number of players
However, I feel that it is slipping and losing its place in the Go
world for several reasons:
· disabled shout
o for the most part, yes we just want to play games, but now
there is no real open community, we're all just strangers -
channels don't count
o newbies can't figure out how to ask questions, deterring
their use
· lack of extra features - other servers are continually adding
features
o KGS provides a rank history graph and allows you to upload an
image
o Cyberoro has an active pair go game and pretend betting
· outdated help - using 'help <command>' often generates
incorrect information or provides information on disabled/ no longer in
existence commands
· not enough players online consistently
o when IGS might have 900 players, Cyberoro might have five or
six servers with over 3000 players each
o I avoided KGS because the population was too strictly
American, and I enjoyed playing people around the world, that is
certainly not the case now
· with Cyberoro's huge population, and KGS unusually tough rankings
where are all the top players going? What's happening to IGS long
time status as the top server?
I'm not trying to upset anyone (at IGS), I just wonder if there is
some consideration to where IGS plans to go? Why will we want to
continue to play at IGS as opposed to another server? Will there be an
active push to make IGS the best server (most features, options, and
players) again? We have the best client, I hope it doesn't go to
waste.
